What is hot stone massage therapy?

Image
Hot stone massage is a popular type of therapy which incorporates the use of flat, smooth and heated stones. To commence the session, the therapist will place the hot stones on specific areas of your body (most commonly the neck, back and shoulders). The heat and pressure of the stones warms up, relaxes and unwinds the muscles which when removed, will allow the therapist to able to perform more vigorous and deeper strokes without triggering pain or discomfort. Hot stone massage is centred around the use of heated stones, before moving onto traditional massage strokes deriving from the Swedish style. Stones used in hot stone massage therapy are usually taken from Balsalt river rocks. The river’s currents make these stones smooth, which enables them to retain heat well. To prepare for the session, the therapist will warm the stones to a precise heat, between 45 and 55 Celsius. To minimise the risk of burning, a professional stone heater is used. It’s important to note that it is very d...

Prenatal massage; baby mamas…is it worth the hype?

Image
I was talking to a pregnant friend a few years back and she told me someone in work had gifted her a ‘ prenatal massage ’, this was the first time I had heard of such a style and we both laughed at the idea. Me and my friend agreed that the last thing you would want when you’re heavily pregnant is to laying on a massage table, semi naked, getting oil on your back. Fast forward three years and here I am; pregnant, aching and with shooting pains that go all the way from my hips to the top of my neck. One night while I was tossing (as much as you can at 7 months pregnant, with a belly the size a space hopper) I thought about prenatal massage again. Opening my laptop I scoured the net to find out more and frankly, I learnt a lot.  I was under the impression that prenatal massage had been created in the same melting pot of ideas that all middle class hippy dippy comes from. The same people that brought you Kale, vegan cookies, baby multi-sensory music classes and keep fit bingo. I tho...

Bonkers or brilliant? The world’s most weirdly wonderful massages

Image
Let’s be honest, the world is a pretty bonkers place and this piece we explore the most bizarre massages the world has to offer. It was a tough call, but here we’ve narrowed it down to three of the most weirdly wonderful. Blade massage If you get the chance to visit Taiwan the chances are you’ll end up in a market, which will immerse you into stall after stall selling local cuisine and traditional garments. One thing you wouldn’t expect to see is a stall with all of the employees carrying knives. This is no butchers, but instead a unique massage shop where knives are incorporated into the sessions. Tourists and residents are visiting the downtown Tapei market to enjoy a blade massage , which costs around £7.50 for a ten minute session. Unlike many massages, the knife massage is performed fully clothed and with blunt blades to minimise the chance of injury. Instead of using their hands, they use two knives to find pressure points throughout the body. A series of soft chopping moti...

Three things to look for in a massage therapist

Image
Massages are relaxing, stress-easing and exhilarating. However, if they’re not performed by the right person it’ll be more of a flop than a seventh heaven experience. Someone who has the relevant qualifications Just like doctors undertaking medical degrees and solicitors going to law school, therapists needs the relevant qualifications to work in the massaging profession. After all, having a therapist who hasn’t had any training could your muscles more harm than good. Depending on which area of massaging the aspiring therapist wants to go into, there are various courses available. Let’s take erotic masseuses for example, they usually enrol in Tantra training schools to study. Here they learn all about the male body and master the art of seduction. As part of their training programme, the buddi...

However, trust me when I say once you have one, you will certainly make it a regular activity. If you are like me, you might be put of having a massage as you feel it is very out of your depth or you are unsure about which one to have. What is a Swedish massage? Swedish massage therapy is one of the most highly recognised, loved and respected forms of massage therapy throughout the world. It is very hands on as the therapist uses their hands, fingers, elbows and forearms to massage and manipula...

What is a sports massage?

Image
It is a common misconception that sports massages are strictly for those high performance athletes when in fact the truth is that they are highly beneficial for everyone and anyone, regardless of sporting or athletic ability. Due to advertising campaigns, we are often mislead to believe that we have to be a professional footballer or avid gym goer to reap any sort of benefits from having a sports massage, however many people who do little or no exercise enjoy everything that they have to offer. Sports massages are designed to provide you with a deep and rehabilitating process that manipulates the soft tissue, making sure to prevent injury, elevate the muscle or to get rid of any tension or stress the muscles are experiencing. Sports massages aren’t just for athletes… You don’t have to be a gym bunny, marathon monster or cross-fit connoisseur to feel as if you have the right to pop into your local sports masseuse or physiotherapist for a good old body rub down… it is accessible to...
