Bonkers or brilliant? The world’s most weirdly wonderful massages

Let’s be honest, the world is a pretty bonkers place and this piece we explore the most bizarre massages the world has to offer. It was a tough call, but here we’ve narrowed it down to three of the most weirdly wonderful.

Blade massage

If you get the chance to visit Taiwan the chances are you’ll end up in a market, which will immerse you into stall after stall selling local cuisine and traditional garments. One thing you wouldn’t expect to see is a stall with all of the employees carrying knives. This is no butchers, but instead a unique massage shop where knives are incorporated into the sessions. Tourists and residents are visiting the downtown Tapei market to enjoy a blade massage, which costs around £7.50 for a ten minute session.

Unlike many massages, the knife massage is performed fully clothed and with blunt blades to minimise the chance of injury. Instead of using their hands, they use two knives to find pressure points throughout the body. A series of soft chopping motions is then used to unleash all of the negative energy built in the muscles. The blade therapists believe this improves oxygen and blood flow, decreases stress and relieves aches and pains. But would you swap the unwinding Swedish massage for a blade massage?

Snail facial

Let’s slither away to our next bizarre massage, literally. Snail massage has been a thing in Japan for decades now, but now you can enjoy (or maybe endure) the slithery procedure in the UK. A Northampton salon is offering a £50 snail massage for beauty-obsessed clients.

The session involves five large snails slithering along the face, but why would you put yourself through this? You may ask. Well, snail mucus boasts hyaluronic acids which contain anti-aging properties. Therefore, many women are opting for a snail massage as an organic alternative to creams which contain harsh chemicals. The salon owner stresses that this unique facial isn’t a gimmick and advises clients to book a block of sessions to be immersed into the full benefits. Would you swap for your Clinic moisturiser for snail slither?

Bite massage

Deep tissue massage is known for being a little uncomfortable, but would you be keen to have the vigorous procedure if it included the power of teeth? Well this is exactly what LA therapist Dr Dot offers. Conforming to many traditional massages, clients are asked to undress and place themselves facing down on the massage table, what comes next is what we can only describe as unique.

Dr Dot makes her hands secondary, as she navigates her teeth from the upper buttocks to the shoulders, before repeating on the other side. The session ends with a little nibble on the neck. The spinal area is avoided and clients are asked to relax their muscles to avoid discomfort. The bizarre therapist swears the alternative treatment is the key to nurse an ailment back to go health. It may sound peculiar, but A-listers such as Kanye West, Eminem and Katy Perry have enjoyed the wonders of Dr Dot’s bite, but would you join the bizarre bandwagon?
